X-Men Director Challenges Popular MCU Wolverine Fancast with an Intriguing DCU Alternative

Former X-Men director Matthew Vaughn has countered a popular MCU Wolverine fan cast with casting speculation of his own, only this time concerning a character expected to appear in the fledgling DCU. Vaughn previously directed X-Men: First Class and has since worked on the Kingsman movies with actor Taron Egerton. In recent years, Egerton’s name has often been raised when concerning recasting an actor as Wolverine for the MCU despite Hugh Jackman’s return for Deadpool 3.

However, Vaughn recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he was asked his thoughts on Egerton potentially bringing the iconic mutant to life. Vaughn retorted:

“I think he’d be better as Lex Luthor. I think he’d be an amazing Luthor. He shouldn’t be Wolverine, I don’t think… I don’t think he’s right for it… I would go back to what the comic is, a really small, little grizzly, tough guy.”

These comments are certainly interesting from Vaughn and add a lot of value to the Wolverine recasting discourse. Through working on X-Men: First Class and the comments above, it is clear Vaughn has a solid vision of the character of Wolverine. While only a brief cameo, Vaughn also included Jackman’s Wolverine in his X-Men movie. This, combined with his extended work with Egerton on Kingsman, means that his opinion should be taken heavily into consideration regarding why Egerton may not fit the MCU as Wolverine but would fit the DCU as Superman’s arch-enemy.

Why Taron Egerton Would Be A Great DCU Lex Luthor Casting

Vaughn’s comments may seem to come out of left field concerning Egerton playing Lex Luthor in the DCU’s Superman movie, yet the choice is an inspired one. Egerton has proved across his Hollywood career that he has an excellent range concerning playing different characters. Egerton can easily embody the overwhelming charm and suave nature of Eggsy in the Kingsman films which was also proved in his Emmy-nominated performance as the charismatic Jimmy Keene in Apple TV+’s Black Bird. Conversely, Egerton has proven he can play more awkward, introverted characters as seen in 2016’s Eddie the Eagle.

Combined with Egerton’s critically acclaimed turn as Elton John in Rocketman, the actor has endlessly showcased that he has the range capable of playing any character. As such, he would fit seamlessly into the DCU as Lex Luthor while also slotting into the younger cast that Gunn wished for in Superman: Legacy as he is of a similar age to David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan who were cast as Superman and Lois Lane respectively. These sentiments are clearly echoed by Matthew Vaughn who, after his work on the X-Men franchise, thinks Egerton’s talents better fit the DCU supervillain than the MCU’s rage-infused Wolverine.
